Ceramic artists are spoiled and so the consumers! The modern stain technology used by bathroom wall tiles India manufacturers has made it possible for artisans to create rainbow colors for tiles at their fingertips. In this post, we will explain the ins and outs of ceramic stains used by professionals to color ceramic products including tiles, pottery, and decorative.

Before that, we will talk about the basic terms used by ceramic factory people-

Frits:

Frits are the ceramic materials that have been blended, melted/sintered/fused together in a kiln, quenched, and ground to a particular size. They can be applied as part of a glaze recipe or added to coloring oxides, or stains to help in melting process.

Spinel:

Spinel is the mineral mixed with alkaline oxide and amphoteric oxide. You can consider gemstones as a natural spinel example. In ceramics, spinels are applied for producing commercial colorants since they are chemically stable in molten glass.

Stains:

Stains are the coloring oxides suspended in water. In other terms, it is an oxide wash that may contain frit and / or kaolin. Commercial ceramic colored pigments are applied in glazes, clay bodies, slips and engobes. The coloring oxides prepared at the workshop are fritted, reground, and colored with organic dyes in order to simulate fired color.

What are specialty stains?

Specialty stains are the encapsulated stains used by potters to achieve colors easily that were once impossible with traditional stains. These stains have secondary name – inclusion stains or pigments. With the help of encapsulation process, potters can now make several hues of yellow through red at reliable temperatures in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres.

Inclusion stains have certain firing temperatures and duration of firing protocols. If the fired glaze surface gets any damage, it can form crystals. Washes made commercial stains can be applied both over and under several glazes. Potters use 50% stain and 50% frit ratio. The results they get are satisfactory and reliable.

Tile manufacturers are also using same technique to achieve desired colors. However, some advanced manufacturing companies are using inkjet technology for HD prints in tiles.
